Wireless Information Network
Background
The first wireless LAN pilot project was launched in July 1998. It started as an 8 Mbps (8 million bits per second)
pre-802.11 standard service and was subsequently upgraded to 11 Mbps when the IEEE 802.11b standard was announced.
A total of 60 wireless Access Points, the Wireless LAN equivalent of Base Stations in mobile phone networks,
were installed throughout the campus, selectively covering places like libraries, common corridors and canteens.
About 1,000 wireless PC Card for notebooks were also loaned to staff and students.
Current Wireless LAN in NUS Campus
The wireless LAN technology has evolved very fast since then. As of today near 1,000 wireless Access Points have been
deployed in NUS Kent Ridge campus, providing pervasive coverage at the maximum transmission speed of 54 Mbps.
With the installation size of near 1,000 wireless access points the University has provided almost full wireless
coverage campus wide. Please make a report to NUS IT Care if
you find that the wireless coverage in a particular area is unsatisfactory.
How Do I Start Using WinZONE Service?
